For over 15 years, Udemy has been my go-to for learning modern technology applications, from IT to building websites, developing mobile apps, or learning project management. You can start as a beginner and advance to an expert level and even test for certification when completing your training from Udemy. Today, they have over 49 million students worldwide, over 64k instructors, and over 135k courses to choose from in over 75 languages (Erbay, 2022).
First, before purchasing the course, I can review the contents of the course to see if I like the instructor and how the lessons are laid out. They offer courses with various levels of skill. They have a helpful rating system to help make your decision on which course is best for you.
Content is important, but I am usually drawn by the personality characteristics of the instructor more than anything else. The instruction narrative is inclusive, it feels like the instructor is having a conversation with you instead of rattling off a bunch of information at you. The better instructors will engage you with a little humor or give exercises within the lesson plans to assess your comprehension. These little exercises are a great barometer for the student, they allow you to take a moment and test yourself to make sure you have learned all the concepts or techniques before moving on to the next lesson. Another reason I would recommend this learning platform is that it is a lifetime investment and as technology changes, the courses are updated with new instruction.
If you are not a techy, they also offer courses in soft skills areas too like courses on communication, management systems, leadership or creative problem solving (Udemy, 2022).
